The hike took us to the edge of the top of a mountain where there is a HUGE ROCK. Since there is a town right below that big rock (Pineville, KY), years ago they put a big chain up there supposedly protecting the people in Pineville. The big rock has never fallen --so I suppose that the people below are SAFE.... I will do an entire blog post about this sometime on Joyful Reflections... It was an interesting hike!!!

I would hate to see the rock fall, maybe it is good that they chained it up.

Betsy, what a great story and photo to go along with it. Makes me wonder what the rock is chained to and how did they know that if the rock fell that it wouldn't pull down whatever it is chained to too?! haha! :D

Love the story of the chained rock. I have never heard of that before but I suppose if you live underneath it, it makes a lot of sense.

I've always thought the chain was more for show that anything else. There's no way that chain would hold that rock. :) Very beautiful view from there however.
I'm not sure that the chain would hold that rock if it had a mind to fall, but it's a great story. If it makes the folks down below feel safer, then I guess that is all that matters. Nice photo Betsy. Pine Mountain is only a couple of hours from my home town. Did you know that my home town (and family) are in Kentucky?

Dear Betsy, that's a breathtaking view of the forests and valley and mountains beyond. I wonder if that chain could really hold that rock from falling??? And if it did tumble down the mountain side are there trees that might curtail its fall? So many questions!!! Peace.
